Goodnight Gorilla

Posted by on March 2, 2013
Goodnight Gorilla is a long time favourite of ours.  When Blake was little he could name lots of animal sounds.  Sheep say baa, cows say moo, etc.  When you asked him what a gorilla said, he said “Shhhh” from this lovely book by Peggy Rathman.

When Blake and I decided to enter the Books 2 Eat Competition at school, I told him he could choose any book he liked, especially his favourite construction books.  He immediately chose Goodnight Gorilla.  I told him no problem, but if he wanted to change to a construction book, that would be okay with me.  I was pretty sure we could make an awesome dump truck cake.  He told me that he really wanted to make Goodnight Gorilla because that book has always been special to him.  You can’t say no to that, so I started doing some research.

God bless the internet, and God bless Pinterest, because I found some monkey cupcakes in just a few minutes that I knew Blake could make with a tiny bit of guidance from me.  Then I figured out some zoo and gorilla crafts, because I am no baker and it is important to play to your strengths.

Together we made the most awesome Goodnight Gorilla Book 2 Eat that you have ever seen!  Aren’t Blake’s bubble letters terrific?

Here is a close up of the cupcakes.  Blake did everything himself except the mouth.  ”I yuv assembly lines mommy.  I do the icing and the cookies and the eyes and you do the mouth.”

Here he is winning his BEST DISPLAY AWARD from our fabulous librarian Kimbra.  He’s a very, very proud boy!

Well done Blake on winning the ‘cutest blonde haired kid in the library every morning, kicking his shoes off, helping light candles, making HUGE gorilla displays and delivering cup cakes’ award….
